Scenic, Historic Martinsburg

Spring 2009

Martinsburg and Berkeley County Tourism Information

If you enjoy seeing history, rather than reading about it, then Martinsburg is your place to visit any time.

Make your first stop the Belle Boyd House, located just across the parking lot from the train station. This is the home of the Martinsburg and Berkeley County Historical Society. While you browse through its collection, you can learn about Belle Boyd, the most beautiful spy of the Confederacy.

Martinsburg was an active and important Civil War junction—in fact, the city changed hands 57 times between 1861 and 1865, as both North and South vied for control of the railroad hub. Make sure you visit the unique B&O Roundhouse, built in 1866, replacing the one destroyed during the Civil War. The Roundhouse has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

Had enough history? Take a break and re-energize! You’ll be happy to discover a plethora of casual eateries, and antiquing and shopping options to satisfy everyone’s taste. Fine dining choices abound in Martinsburg, as well.

If you’re planning on staying over a night or two, there are plenty of great chain hotels to choose among, but how about a real adventure? Willow Run Farms, on a 200-acre working farm near Hedgesville, offers authentic reproduction teepees for your stay! Prefer more creature comforts? Give their cozy bed & breakfast, Cider Mill House, a try instead.
